Klein ISD Reaches Out to Dropouts
During school year 2009-2010, the Klein ISD will launch new strategies to assist students who have left school so that they may reenroll to obtain a high school diploma.
On September 12, the district will participate in the greater-Houston Reach Out to Dropouts Walk. Since the walk began in 2005, over 4,000 area students have returned to school as a result of the united effort to support graduation from high school.
Each KISD high school will participate in recovering its dropouts by offering them encouragement and resources needed to complete their high school education. To support the efforts of students who return to school, the district offers tutoring and TAKS tutorials at no cost to students.
Ms. Angie Mentz, the district’s high school completion specialist noted, “As a result of the district’s gaining a TEA Dropout Recovery Pilot Program grant, Klein will provide new, flexible learning options as well as other locations. This program, 2nd Chance, will offer online instruction and credit recovery in the early evening hours and a TAKS instructional program prior to each TAKS retest. The 2nd Chance Program will begin on September 14.”
The student support services department will oversee the 2nd Chance Program. Working with Ms. Mentz will be Ms. Judy Musgrave, the 2nd Chance Program coordinator.
Ms. Musgrave stated, “With a diploma, students will find more opportunities for reaching their dreams, creating a better life, and increasing their earnings. The new options that the 2nd Chance Program offers will make graduation a possibility for more young people.”
Assisting students in the 2nd Chance Program will be content specialists and lab facilitators who will provide academic support that will enhance student learning and success.
Incentives and transportation support will encourage students to remain in the program until they gain a high school diploma.
To obtain information, please call Ms. Musgrave at 832-249-4341 or contact her at jmusgrave1@kleinisd.net for specific information regarding enrollment.
